Overview

Baseball caps have been around since 1858, but wool fabric is making it a whole new ball game. The Times wrote that wool “adds warm, gentlemanly swagger to a boyhood classic.” Get in the game on cool days with our soft wool herringbone cap, featuring a Times “T” logo and produced by Knickerbocker Manufacturing in Brooklyn.

The baseball cap has a deep-rooted history, dating back to the New York Knickerbockers in 1849. The Knickerbockers, often acknowledged as the sport’s first organized team, introduced the baseball uniform, though it was topped off with a not so game-ready wide straw hat. Around 1858, the Brooklyn Excelsiors introduced the forerunner of the modern baseball cap, with its round crown and small brim.

Our herringbone wool flannel cap is contemporary take on the traditional baseball hat, with densely woven fabric milled in Japan. The fabric’s texture and substance makes the hat an ideal winter accessory. The cap has an embroidered wool felt “T” logo, an adjustable brass buckle and a herringbone cotton twill sweatband. The visor is lightweight to match up with the weight of the wool fabric, yet strong enough to keep its shape.

This cap is part of our Early Edition of vintage-style clothing. Each item in this collection links to The Times’s past and is produced in collaboration with Knickerbocker Manufacturing in Brooklyn.
